The SharePoint 2010 document library in Microsoft Office365 is essentially a sophisticated Windows file folder.
In addition to being storage for documents the document library features include collaboration, check in/out, personalization, workflows, user permissions, and version history audit trails.
Similar to the Windows file folder the document library can hold various file types. The document library can and does block some file types for safety. The list of blocked file types can be modified in Central Administration but caution is strongly recommended.
Briefly, the procedure for using the SharePoint 2010 document library begins with Libraries in the left side navigation of SharePoint 2010. Left click on the link for Libraries.
The Libraries page will open. Next left click on Create.
The Create dialog box appears. In the left side navigation under the heading of All Types left-click on Library.
Multiple icons will appear representing different types of a Library. In this example Document Library is selected.
Click on the More Options button to open the Name and Descrition page.
In this example the document library is named DVD Collection and the Description is DVD Collection.
A Yes or No option is provided for Navigation. Select Yes to have a link appear in the left side navigation in SharePoint 2010 for the document library or select No to have no link.
A Yes or No option is provided for the Document Version History. Select Yes to have an audit trail of document changes or select No to not have the audit trail.
Select an option from a drop down menu regarding the default document preference. If none then select None.
Click the Create button. Wait for processing and a moment later the document library is completed and ready for use.
